Use and Limitations of Standardized Behavior Assessments in Shelters

Speaker: Kyle Bohland, DVM, MS,

Director of Animal Behavior & Welfare, Columbus Humane

July 2, 2026

12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Zoom

Join us for a presentation and discussion on standardized canine behavior evaluations in animal shelters with Dr. Kyle Bohland, Director of Animal Behavior and Welfare at Columbus Humane. This session will examine the intended role of behavior assessments in promoting public safety and informed decision-making, while also reviewing the growing body of research highlighting their limitations in predicting post-adoption behavior. Topics will include the reliability and validity of standardized assessments, the impact of the shelter environment on behavior, and the potential risks associated with overreliance on single-point evaluations. The discussion will also explore how shelters can integrate standardized assessments with behavioral history, observational data, and individualized care strategies to support animal welfare, public safety, and successful placements.

ABOUT DR. BOHLAND

Dr. Bohland is a veterinarian and animal behavior professional. He completed a residency in behavioral medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022 and subsequently remained on faculty, where he taught behavioral medicine and managed referred behavior cases in dogs and cats. His clinical caseload primarily included aggression, separation-related distress, compulsive behaviors, anxiety disorders, elimination disorders, fear/phobia conditions, and complex medical cases with behavioral manifestations. He joined Columbus Humane in 2025 to focus on supporting successful long-term outcomes for shelter animals before they develop more severe behavioral disorders that are more difficult to treat and manage. His professional interests include psychopharmacology, end-of-life and hospice care, and pain management.
